Bertie's Story

Bertie Maxine (Pearson) Logan, 88, of Stillwater, went to be with her Lord and savior on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013. Graveside services were held Monday, Nov. 18 at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau. Officiating was Dean Bryce of Church of Christ in Stillwater. Strode Funeral Home, Stillwater, was entrusted with arrangements. She was born Jan. 18, 1925, to Dudley Max Pearson and Mattie Hazel (Porter) Pearson in Witthorne, Carroll County, Tennessee. She attended Oklahoma A&M where she earned a B.A. in home economics and one of the first persons to earn a M.A. in early childhood education. She was a much loved and dedicated kindergarten teacher for 34 years. Bertie was a member of Stillwater Church of Christ, Brookside Church of Christ in Oklahoma City and First Christian Church in Poteau. Raised in Tennessee, she loved to share stories of growing up picking cotton and having her father read bedtime stories by oil lamp. During World War II, she worked in the Milan (Tenn.) Army Ammunition Plant prior to moving to Poteau to live with an aunt where she then met her future husband. She married Joe Paul Logan on March 22, 1946, in Fort Smith, Ark. They were married until his death on Jan. 15, 1985. She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother, DeWayne Pearson of Cedar Grove, Tenn. She is survived by her daughter, Paula Jo Kennedy and her husband Richard of Stillwater; son, Joe Scott Logan and his wife Christie of Placitas, N.M.; three grandchildren, Aimee Logan Pearce and her husband Jordan of Houston, Zachary Logan of Dallas and Lauren Kennedy of Stillwater; great-grandson, Archer Pearce; three brothers, Harold Pearson of Cedar Grove, Tenn., Billy Pearson of Huntingdon, Tenn. and Jimmy Pearson of Huntingdon, Tenn.; three sisters, Kathleen Wheeler of Milan, Tenn.; Marie Burr of Hendersonville, Tenn. and Wanda Crossett of Huntingdon, Tenn.
