John Madison Fleming, 85, went to be with his Lord and Savior Friday, Nov. 27, 2009. He was born Feb. 29, 1924, to Joseph E. and Ava Lee Fleming, in Santa Rosa, NM. He was a proud Navy veteran of WWII. Just before he shipped out for overseas duty, he married Marie Bradley on Feb. 10, 1945 in San Diego, and they have had an everlasting love of 64 years. After the war, he went to college at OBU and graduated from Southwestern University in Weatherford. He then proceeded to earn his Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was ordained Oct. 5, 1950 and had pastorates in Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee and New Mexico. He was the first full-time pastor at Southern Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. For a period of time, he also was a bond broker for Security Church Finance. John was born to preach and many people have come to know Jesus through his messages of God's Word. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ruth Ball; brother, Fred Fleming; and granddaughter, Alisa Marie. He is survived by his wife Marie; sister, Mary Jo Walker of Bethany; daughter, Aleta Wheelbarger and husband, Fred of Moore; sons, David Fleming and wife, Cathy of Seattle, Wash., and Brad Fleming and wife, Trudy of Glenwood Springs, Colo.. He was blessed to have 5 grandchildren, Brent and wife, Marsha Wheelbarger, Moore, Aaron Wheelbarger and wife Caroline, Oklahoma City, Carly Palady and husband Brian, Seattle, Wash., Kalee and Casey Fleming of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; and great-granddaughter, Emma Leigh, Moore. He dearly loved his brother-in-law, Hack and wife Dortha, as well as his sisters-in-law, Fern and husband Harry, Faye and husband Harold and Bobbie. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Southern Hills Baptist Church. The family requests that any memorial gifts be given to Southern Hills Baptist Church in honor of their former pastor. Last but not least, the family wishes to express their sincere thanks to Michele Ayres, RN and Sarah Edwards, LPN of Excel Hospice for their love and care of John. Services are under the direction of the John M. Ireland Funeral Home -- Chapel.
