Lois's Story

Lois Kathleen Mahaffey was born July 18, 1917, in Snyder to Dixie and Eugene Merle Mahaffey. She died Saturday, Nov. 21 at her home in Norman. Her senior year in high school, Kay drove the school bus and graduated as valedictorian of her class at Devol. She received BA and MA degrees in English literature from the University of Oklahoma and earned a PhD from the University of Texas. Ms. Mahaffey was the editor for the university press at University of Texas, University of Oklahoma and Wisconsin University. Kay taught English literature at Moore High School, University of Texas at Austin, Wisconsin University at Madison, University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez and the University of Kentucky at Louisville, where she retired to Norman. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Enid Shirley and Xie Cornelius of Oklahoma City, and sister Doris Starkey of Brownwood, Texas. She is survived by her sister Bonnie Humphreys and husband Jack, and her brother Jim Mahaffey and wife Kathryn, all of Oklahoma City.
